Department of Metallurgy

Japan boasts the world’s top technologies for manufacturing advanced steel plate used in automobiles. In the Department of Metallurgy, development is being carried out toward further advancing these technologies in environmentally sound ways, contributing to the growth of the metal materials industry on which today’s manufacturing depends.

Through their research and studies, students learn the fundamentals of the metal materials industry, including the chemical reactions that occur in molten metal during processes to remove impurities or add various elements to a crude metal (physical chemistry); how to predict changes in a material’s properties caused by differences in temperature and composition (microstructure of materials); and other fields such as diffraction crystallography and analytical science.
