Work under Student Visa

Students are permitted to enter Japan for the purpose of study and research. Under the Immigration Control and Refugee-Recognition Act they are authorized to engage only in activities related to this purpose.
However, if they are obliged to work part time in order to cover school expenses or other needs, they may be allowed to do so within certain limits (28 hours per week for regular students and 14 hours per week for auditors; 8 hours a day during a long vacation). Once a part-time job has been decided, permission is required for activities other than those permitted under student status (permission is not required for part-time employment by Tohoku University), so please apply to the Immigration Bureau that has jurisdiction over the area where you live. For details, please refer to:.

After permission is granted, a seal of verification will be attached to the passport and simultaneously the contents of the activity will be stated on the column of the reverse side of the residence card.

Submit either the copy of both sides of the residence card or the page with the verification seal on your passport to the Student Support Section (Gakusei Shien Kakari), Educational Affairs Division.
