(1) Applications for residence at International House and University House (students only) are solicited twice each year (for April and October residence) through notifications to each laboratory in August and December sent via each department office. Individuals who seek residence are to consult with their academic advisor and submit the application documents to their department office by the specified deadline. Individuals scheduled to enter the university who seek residence are to consult with their expected academic advisor and submit their application via their expected academic advisor.
Applications for residence are not accepted at any other time of year.

(2) The number of applicants for residence at International House and University House (students only) has been increasing each year along with the increase in the number of international students at Tohoku University, so some applicants may not be accommodated.

International students who are not using Tohoku University International Students Support Association's Housing Rent Joint Surety Program but who wish to enroll directly in Japan Educational Exchanges and Services Comprehensive Renters Insurance for Foreign Students Studying in Japan should submit the following forms to 国際交流係 Kokusai Kouryu Kakari (International Affairs Section) of the 教務課 Kyomu-ka (Academic Affairs Division):

  • A copy of their rental contract
  • A copy of the receipt for their payment of the insurance premium

Payment forms for insurance premiums may be obtained at the International Affairs Section.

Tohoku University International Students Support Association's Housing Rent Joint Surety Program

International students who are unable to find a joint guarantor for renting an apartment may apply, and if approved, may use the Tohoku University International Students Support Association as a guarantor.
Conditions for eligibility are:

  1. use of a housing contract specified by the university, and
  2. enrollment in housing insurance specified by the university (International Student General Housing Insurance).

The application forms and premium payment form may be obtained at the 国際交流係 Kokusai Koryu Kakari (International Affairs Section) of the 教務課 Kyomu-ka (Academic Affairs Division).
