Housing for International Students
- 1.International House
Applications for residence at International House and University House (students only) are solicited twice each year (for April and October residence) through notifications to each laboratory in July and December sent via each department office. Individuals who seek residence are to consult with their academic advisor and submit the application documents to their department office by the specified deadline. Individuals scheduled to enter the university who seek residence are to consult with their expected academic advisor and submit their application via their expected academic advisor.
Applications for residence are not accepted at any other time of year.
The number of applicants for residence at International House and University House (students only) has been increasing each year along with the increase in the number of international students at Tohoku University, so some applicants may not be accommodated. - 2.Renting an apartment
When renting an apartment in Japan, a guarantor such as a “joint guarantor” is required in most cases. If you do not have any relatives in Japan to act as a guarantor, there are two guarantor systems that international students can use; 1) ‘Sumuraku plan’ (recommended by Tohoku University) or 2) Guarantor service provided by rental guarantor companies.

Recommended reasons
- A multilingual call center is available 24 hours a day for residents. You can receive language support at any time if you encounter communication issues with the landlord or real estate company or in case of emergencies or accidents.
- An emergency response service is available in case an accident occurs.
- Residents can request support from the call center when renewing their apartment contract or handling cancellation procedures.
- The call center keeps a copy of the contract, ensuring smooth support.

If you want to use ‘Sumuraku Plan’, you need to apply E type in Comprehensive Insurance For Students Lives Coupled with “Gakkensai.”
In case you have enrolled in A/B type or others, you must change to E type. It takes 2 months to make procedure about it, so please come by the Student Support section, 3rd floor of Center Hall in Aobayama East Campus.
