2014/03/19

The launch date for the 50kg-class small Earth observation satellite “Rising-2,” jointly developed by Tohoku University and Hokkaido University, has been set for May 24, 2014.

“Rising-2” completed the flight model request for proposal immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster on June 3, 2011, and on March 28, 2014, was chosen by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) as a piggyback satellite on the “Daichi 2” Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS-2). JAXA has publicly announced the launch date for ALOS-2 as May 24, 2014 and Tohoku University will deliver “Rising-2” in early April.

In the development of “Rising-2,” Tohoku University was responsible for the design, fabrication, and assembly of the satellite system, and Hokkaido University was responsible for the various scientific equipment installed such as the high performance telescopic camera and the thermal infrared camera.
