Successful fortyfold increase of spin detection sensitivity within semiconductors

2014/03/07

A research group led by Doctor Program (D3) Junichi Shiogai (Research Fellow of the Japn Society for the Promotion of Science), Associate Professor Makoto Kohda and Professor Junsaku Nitta of the Graduate School of Engineering at Tohoku University in joint research with Associate Professor Tsutomu Nojima of the Institute for Materials Research at Tohoku University and Professor Dieter Weiss at the University of Regensburg successfully developed a spin Esaki tunnel junction device with a fortyfold increase in the sensitivity of electron spin detection in semiconductors compared to conventional devices. The results of this research adds a new feature, spin signal amplification, in the field of spintronics and is expected to contribute to new developments in spintronics devices such as high sensitivity detection of spin information.
