Diving into the past: Aizuwakamatsu

2014/03/10

The IEED (Div. International Education & Exchange, School of Engineering) organized on March 8 a one-day excursion to Aizuwakamatu city. It is located 200 km South-West of Sendai city. The excursion started first with the visit of the school of the clan ruling the Aizu domain, Nisshinkan, where we also experienced Zen meditation. Most participants’ encountered difficulties in achieving concentration even though a chief priest instructed us to focus on slow and deep breathing. We then moved to an historical restaurant downtown Aizuwakamatsu where we had “Wappameshi” and some other local foods. Our trip ended with the visit of Ouchi village, a post station of the Aizu domain. All houses were covered in snow and the participants could consequently enjoy the snow capped thatched roofs, a typical folkway of Japan during winter season.
