Science Day for Girls

2014/07/30

The Science Day in Sendai has been held on July 20th and followed the inauguration ceremony of the Qatar Science Campus Hall. However, contrary to the previous editions, this year’s activities have been open exclusively to girls.

The first activity has been co-arranged by the Association of Leading Women Researchers in Engineering (ALicE) and the “Science Angels” of Tohoku University. It consisted for the young participants of designing handbags and other accessories making use of appliques, ribbons and more interestingly of Light Emitting Diodes.

The second activity has been sponsored and organized by the Sony Science Program. As a first step, the participants had to weld on a circuit board several discrete resistors and other condensers to fabricate an electric circuit. Later, the “young engineers” had to use this circuit as a tool to acknowledge the difference between a conventional Light Emitting Diode and a laser one. To conclude the activity, the organizing team provided an explanation of the physical mechanism underlying both diodes.
