Discovery of new crystallization mechanism in oxide glass: Toward the creation of innovative functional glass

2015/03/19

Mr. Kazuya Takano of graduate student in Department of Applied Physics, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, Assoc. Prof. Yoshihiro Takahashi and Prof. Takumi Fujiwara in collaboration with Dr. Wolfgang Wisniewski and Prof. Christian Rüssel in Otto-Schott-Institut, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (Jena University) have succeeded in discovery of peculiar crystallization and its crystal-oriented structure without precedent in oxide glass. This study started on the basis of a pioneer work of glass-ceramic material in Prof. Fujiwara’s lab. The each researcher has proved the material to be reproducible, and finally the research groups successfully obtained the significant achievement as a result of international collaborative work. The achievement is expected to contribute to creation of glass-ceramic material with highly-oriented texture which is difficult to obtain by means of usual glass-ceramics processing.

The results of this research were published online in the British natural science journal “Scientific Reports” on March 17. The paper's title is “Microstructure of Transparent Strontium Fresnoite Glass-Ceramics.”
