Prof. Sugawa’s Research Group Has Developed a Newly Released 10 Million Frames Per Second Ultra-high-speed Video Camera with Improved Photosensitivity of ISO16000

Prof. Shigetoshi Sugawa's research group at the Management Science and Technology, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University in cooperation with Shimadzu Corporation (President & CEO Teruhisa Ueda) has developed an ultra-high-speed CMOS image sensor that offers 10 million frames per second with ISO16,000 photosensitivity. An ultra-high-speed video camera incorporating the developed CMOS image sensor is newly released by Shimadzu Corporation.

The released ultra-high-speed video camera, Hyper Vision HPV-X2, offers a significantly higher photosensitivity than the previous model released in September 2012, while maintaining the recording speed of 10 million frames per second; the world's fastest in its class. The higher photosensitivity means more vivid images to be captured even under low light conditions, such as under a microscope.

The improvement was enabled by the newly developed ultra-high-speed CMOS image sensor, FTCMOS2. For the FTCMOS2 development, Prof. Sugawa's research group has reinvestigated the performance bottleneck and revised the pixel structure and circuit design from those of its previous development.

The higher sensitivity of ultra-high-speed video camera is to be greatly utilized for advanced scientific research and life-scientific and engineering developments by allowing the observation of a variety of ultra-high-speed phenomena that could not be clearly captured previously, such as the interactions between cancer cells and drug-filled microcapsules, the fuel injection process of automotive fuel injectors, or the ink ejection process of inkjet printers.
