Novel Shape Memory Alloys with Multifunctional Properties

We develop new shape memory alloys for the applications as functional materials. Recently, we are working on Co-based shape memory alloys where a unique reentrant martensitic transformation behavior occurs. This unique behavior brings about new functionalities such as cooling-induced shape memory effect and elastocaloric switching effect. We collaborate with Prof. Thomas Niendorf for the utilization of additive manufacturing, attempting an improvement of the mechanical properties. We also collaborate with Prof. Hanuš Seiner for the experimental measurements of elastic properties and with Asst. Prof. Paul Stonaha for the inelastic neutron scattering measurements, which aims to a full understanding of the unique physical phenomena.
