Department of Materials Science and Engineering

The many industrial products, buildings, and transportation structures surrounding us, which have been developed to enrich our daily lives, are all made using a variety of materials. The materials that support our living environment are not just metals but include semiconductors, ceramics, polymers, and composite materials made from these. They must meet demands for high performance and diverse functionality. In the energy field, the materials technology for obtaining energy from hydrogen is attracting notice.

In addition to basic engineering knowledge, students in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering gain the basic knowledge and concepts necessary for creating materials, on the way to becoming engineers and researchers who can contribute to society by supporting the next-generation materials industries on the global stage.

Why Choose Us?

The Department offers four courses, in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Materials Processing, and Eco Materials Science. Along with these are graduate school departments and cooperating classes in related institutes, covering a total of 51 fields in all. In both number of researchers and number of students, it is the largest group of research institutes of its kind in Japan, and among the largest in the world.

In number of research and academic paper citations, the Department ranks third in the world. As a university department, it boasts the world number one spot. The more than 16 recipients of academic awards testify to the high level of leading-edge research being carried out by the Department.
