Department of Management Science and Technology

Since its launch in the 2002 academic year, the Department of Management Science and Technology in the Tohoku University Graduate School of Engineering has carried out distinctive education and research that differ from other Departments in the blend of engineering and social systems.

Along with basic education from the standpoint of management engineering, relevant to the intellectual property and technology management that are important factors for application of engineering technology to society, education and research are carried out on approaches and methodologies for conducting systematic analysis of the complex issues in modern society relating to engineering and technology and for giving birth to solutions from a comprehensive perspective. The specific systems that are the objects of education and research in the Department of Management Science and Technology include energy systems, advanced semiconductor devices, network systems, and risk management, as a major feature of the Department is the emphasis on social systems from an overall perspective, not just the individual technologies. In this way the Department is always aiming to expand the frontiers of engineering by developing new academic fields and scholarly principles.

Why Choose Us?

The Department of Management Science and Technology goes beyond the conventional focus on advances in individual technologies, conducting education and research in compound areas such as the theory of technological progress, the relationship between technology and management, and that between innovation and economy. The engineers and scientists to be developed in this Department are not only those who can solve engineering and technology-related issues in society by the approach of inventing and developing new technologies, but those who can operate and design social infrastructure systems with awareness of their impact on society and the environment. A further mission of the Department is to develop engineers and researchers who will be able to create and manage organizations for carrying out technology development projects, requiring broad-ranging knowledge.
