Department of Robotics

Department of Robotics covers a wide range of technology to create future robotics, from human-friendly robots used in super aging society and self-controlled smart mechanical systems to intelligent spaces and smart society as extended concepts of robotics. Research projects includes variety of topics such as the coordinated control systems of multiple robots, self-controlled robots, smart welfare machines, sensors based on MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) technology, sensor networks and nanorobots using DNA as a material. The style of the researches is really “synthetic”, ranging over the construction of theory, design, simulation, prototype, test and implementation in our society.

Why Not Choose Us?

The researchers and instructors in this department as well as the learning environment for students are of the world-class level expected of Tohoku University. Six professors who are the world’s leaders in robot-related field and intelligent control field and four professors who are the world’s top runners for nanosystem technology, such as MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems), sensors and DNA-based molecular robots, and their applications are organizing laboratories, and the education and research capability of the department is globally competitive. Because of their research accomplishments, the faculty members of Department of Robotics are invited to take part in numerous projects in Japan and abroad, and continue to attract large amounts of research funding.

Benefitting from the faculty working in the leading-edge fields along with the excellent research environment, students in this department have the opportunity to be involved in research projects which are always at the forefront of the world.
