I hope you enjoyed the refreshable Golden Week holidays. Since spring arrived in Boston, various festivals have been held in every weekend at Boston common (the park I introduced on last November). On April 24th, “Japan Festival in Boston” was taken place so that I also had a great time in the festival with original Japanese foods. I was so surprised that huge field of Boston common was filled with many Bostonians enjoying Japanese culture.
Today, I’d like to introduce commuting to MIT from my home. My apartment is located in riverside in Beacon hill, therefore it is just across the river from MIT. There are 3 ways to reach to MIT: subway, bike, and walk.
First of all, taking a subway is the fastest and most convenient way. Boston is one of particular cities in US, having great transportation service called MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority). I’m sure that MBTA takes you anywhere in Boston without a car. Indeed, many students in MIT commute by MBTA because there is “MIT station” in the Red line. For me, it takes only one stop from my nearest station (Charles station in the Red line) to MIT, therefore I usually use MBTA in bad weather.
Next, Boston also built convenient bike infrastructure named “Hubway”, a bike sharing system providing more than 1,500 bikes at 155 stations throughout Boston and near urban area. A member who joined Hubway can handily ride a bike from his nearest station and just return it to any stations. I usually commute by Hubway since it is easier to access than MBTA. For example, there are 5 stations near MIT and 2 stations near my apartment. Moreover, it also costs less than MBTA if you become a monthly member.
Finally, walking takes the longest time, however, it is the best way you can feel Boston. Scenery in the middle of the Longfellow bridge definitely makes you fall into love with Boston. Especially in these days, as warm and lovely shiny days continue, it is really optimistic time to take a walk for commuting.
